It’s a rather common occurrence for a small piece of food to accidentally get stuck between two teeth or stubbornly lodged in your gums. Worse still is if you have a bad habit of chewing on objects like pens and pencils and a small piece of the foreign objects gets stuck in your gums.

The first step is to try to vigorously rinse the area with lukewarm saltwater. This might help to dislodge the object from your gums or at least clear your mouth to give you a clear view of your gums.

You shouldn’t attempt to use toothpicks or sharp, pointed tools to pry the object loose. This could injure your gums or even damage your teeth.

Waxed dental floss is the first thing you should reach for to try to remove an object that is stuck in the gum line. The waxy coating allows the strand to slide easier between teeth to worked around the foreign object. You should never force the floss into place, as it could seriously injure your gums.

If waxed dental floss can’t dislodge the object you could try dental fountain or oral water jet. Sometimes vigorously rinsing your mouth with lukewarm salt water can also help loosen the foreign object from your gum line. It can also help soothe injured gum tissues.

If you still can’t easily remove the object you should call Dakota Ridge Dental at 303.933.2420 to schedule an appointment.
