A broken or dislodged dental crown can occur for different reasons: hard food like popcorn kernels, too much pressure, natural wear and tear, and so on. When something happens to your dental crown, you may not be able to see your dentist immediately. If this is the case, we urge you to use at-home care to preserve your crown until your dental appointment.

If your dental crown broke into pieces, try to gather all the parts so that they don’t injure your mouth. Remove the crown entirely if it’s loose to avoid swallowing it. A popped-off crown can be reattached temporarily with over-the-counter dental dement or sugar-free gum.

It’s very important to keep the area clean. Without the dental crown, your natural tooth is vulnerable to bacteria. Please refrain from poking around the area with your fingers. You can and should continue brushing and flossing daily, using extra care around the affected area.

Your tooth may be sensitive to heat and cold because the tooth pulp is exposed to air. This could cause mild to moderate discomfort. Over-the-counter pain reliever will help you stay comfortable until you can see your dentist.
